What’s your Luau Style
Luaus – the Perfect Way to End the Day
Congratulations. You’ve done it. You’ve spent a day in the sun at the beach and you’ve slowed down to the local rhythm of paradise. You’re looking for something in the evening that doesn’t require an immense amount of energy. You’d like to sit back, relax, and sink even a little deeper into your vacation. What could possibly be more relaxing and energizing at the same time than wearing a fresh lei, sipping fresh, local tropical drinks and feasting the traditional Hawaiian way? For many, a great luau is the only possible way to follow a lovely day at the beach.
Everyone who’s been to Hawaii has heard of the famed luau. Fresh leis, Mai Tai’s and the pig roast in the ground are just the start to this magical Hawaiian evening. At most luaus, buffet-style feasts rule the night and it is traditional to start the evening with a lei greeting and a flower-adorned refreshment of your choice.
Souvenirs, Dinner, Drinks and Fire Dancing
Many luaus have an area to watch wood carving, basket weaving, lei and jewelry making with the opportunity to take these items home with you. Make sure you don’t miss the unearthing of the pig from the imu which has been roasting underground all day. At dinner you’ll get to try various local dishes including kalua pig, lomi lomi, lau lau, fresh fish and of course, the ubiquitous poi.
After dinner the real show starts with performers from around the Pacific Rim entertaining with dance, song and even the famous Samoan fire dancer. Wailea has two resort luaus and there are several in the Kaanapali area as well.
Two Different Options in Lahaina
Two Lahaina luaus stand out from the resort luaus. The first is a traditional Hawaiian luau which tells the story of Maui through hula and song. This is also a buffet style with the option of table or floor seating on pillows. Because this is a traditional Hawaiian luau, the Samoan fire dancer is not a part of this event.
The second luau is a bit more intimate in that each party has their own table with table service. The show is set up in four sections. You are served a course from a Pacific Rim area and afterward are entertained by performers.
