Kai Kanani Sailing Whale Report

The Very Best of Whale Season

Humpback Whale under the Kai Kanani

It’s peak whale watching season here in Maui and the Humpback whales are abundant.  This past month we have had some absolutely epic encounters with these magnificent mammals and we want to share one of our most exciting experiences with you.

Last week we had a spectacular mugging by a curious young Humpback whale. Unlike onshore muggings, which are almost always portrayed in a negative context,  whale muggings are a rare delight for everyone – our crew, naturalists, and guests alike.

In a mugging a Humpback whale will connect with a boat and the people on it by getting up close and personal.  That is exactly what happened for the crew and guests aboard Kai Kanani on February 9th.

While on our afternoon whale watch the gentle  giant pictured here appeared near the boat.  Captain Cary shut off the engines of Kai Kanani II as required by law and as demanded by common sense to avoid risk of injury to the young whale.

The young whale slowly swam up to Kai Kanani and spent over 30 minutes swimming under and around the boat, often misting our guests with the salty spray of its spout.  Our guests shouted and cheered as the whale showed us its undivided attention.

The whale was so close to the Kai Kanani that Captain Cary was able to hold his underwater camera next to the boat to get some beautiful up close footage.   No matter how many times you see humpback whales, to have one this close for such a long time is an exciting experience.  This time of year we see whales on all of our trips, and while it may be rare, maybe you or your family will experience the beautiful and powerful connection between people and whales that everyone present that day will carry with them forever.
