Have you ever biked down a Volcano?

Haleakala is a 10,023 foot dormant volcano on Maui. From the top on a clear day you may be able see the nearby islands of Lanai, Molokai, Kahoolawe and even the snow capped peaks of the Big Island, which lies to the south of Maui. The view from the top can be breathtaking, not only for the beautiful views, but also for the chilly morning temperatures.
Biking Down Haleakala
Many of our guests like to experience Haleakala at sunrise and then bike down as sunlight fills paradise. You will pass lavender farms and eucalyptus forests. And you’ll cruise through our unique Hawaiian cattle country and have the opportunity to see horses, deer, elk and wild pigs. These upcountry environs are the land of beautiful flowering trees, Hawaiian Geese (Nene), seabirds, and even Hawaiian honeycreepers – colorful songbirds that live on plant nectar that can be found nowhere else in the world.
How Bike Tours Work and What To Bring
Most tours will pick you up from your condo or hotel and take you up to the summit of Haleakala for sunrise. After sunrise you will arrive at the park entrance at 7,000 feet for the start of your bike ride. Your guides will brief you on your bikes and the route you will take. They will also accompany you along the way.
Cameras are a must, for those panoramic photos of you, Maui and the beautiful Pacific Ocean in the background. It is recommended you dress in layers, and many guide services pack extra gloves and jackets for those extra chilly mornings. Sound a little colder than you’d like? Don’t worry, your guide will follow along in a van so you can store the layers you shed as your day grows warmer and warmer and you make your way through the many eco-climates of Haleakala’s slope.
Breakfast After the Ride
Most bikers stop at one of the quaint restaurants along the way for a late breakfast or early lunch. Some tours include this, but it’s always a good idea to check with your guide and have available funds on hand, if necessary. There’s nothing better than a delicious and fresh Hawaiian breakfast after a beautiful morning ride.
