Tips for Snorkeling for the First Time

A snorkeling trip is a great way to enjoy the sea, but before you go, it’s important to know how to prepare for your trip and stay safe. Here are some tips for snorkeling for the first time. These tips will help beginner snorkelers have a safe and pleasant experience.

Stay Hydrated

This is one of our most important safety tips. It’s important for beginners to drink plenty of fluids before, during, and after the trip to stay hydrated. It can be hard to tell when you’re thirsty in the water, so keep drinking water throughout your trip.

Wear Sunscreen

When you snorkel, wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin from sunburns. The water can wash away your protection, so you should reapply every few hours. Be especially careful about reapplying to your back and around your snorkel mask.

Also, remember that you’ll need to use coral-safe sunscreen to prevent damaging the wildlife around you!

Avoid Contact with Wildlife

It’s important to remember that when you’re snorkeling, there are aquatic animals everywhere. Be mindful of the wildlife and don’t try to touch or feed them. This keeps both you and the wildlife safe.

Beginners should be especially mindful not to touch any coral they encounter. It takes decades to grow a few inches, but only a few seconds for your touch to destroy it.

Be Mindful of Your Body’s Movements in the Water

One of the most important snorkeling tips we can leave you with is to be mindful of your body as you travel. It’s easy to become excited and overwhelmed by everything to see while you’re snorkeling!

But remaining conscious of your body’s movements keeps you and your fellow snorkelers safe while protecting the marine life around you. Try to keep from bumping into any rocks, coral, or sea life. This prevents accidents and damage to the environment from your fins and other snorkeling equipment.

These tips ensure that you’ll have a great time diving during your next experience!
