Wailuku

The Maui Historical Society is one of the premier historical organizations in the Maui area, serving the Wailuku neighborhood. The members of the historical guild are caretakers of the unique environment and history that dot the surface of the Hawaiian islands. This includes plants, animals, beaches, and water. Society takes responsibility for artifacts, photographs, and documents that pay homage to the history of the people who have lived on the islands for generations.

There are countless exhibits run by the Maui Historical Society, providing everyone with an opportunity to learn more about what the islands stand for and what life was like before the area was developed. The Maui Historical Society is also active in local government, fighting to protect the natural beauty of Hawaii and Maui.

The Hawaiian Islands Land Trust – Maui Office, renamed in 2021 to Hawaii Land Trust or HILT, is a nonprofit organization in Wailuku that was started to “protect the lands that sustain us for current and future generations”. The Hawaiian organization collaborates with landowners to restrict commercial and other island development. The landowner either accepts a conservation easement on the land or sells it to the organization.

Besides protecting Hawaiian land by putting it in its land trust, the Hawaii Land Trust provides education, recreation, and research opportunities. Talk Story on the Land is a regularly held educational walk. The HILT properties are open for fishing, hiking, and camping. The Hawaii Land Trust staff researches Hawaii’s unique anchialine ponds and the culture surrounding them.

The trust has protected 57 Hawaiian properties on Molokaʻi, O’ahu, Kauai, Maui, and Hawaiʻi Island. These properties add up to over 21,650 acres of protected land. There are 2,100 acres that are protected in preserves open to the public. More than 19,000 acres are protected via the aforementioned conservation easements.

The Hawaii Land Trust includes coastal dunes and wetlands refuge in Waihe’e that protects over 277 acres of Maui land. It includes 24 acres of spring-fed coastal wetland, 103 acres of sand dune ecosystem, over 7,000 feet of shoreline, and 8 acres of riparian habitat. Besides environmental importance, the Hawaii Land Trust also has important historical value, having been the site of kings’ homes, Hawaiian legends, and historic battles. The refuge was once host to two Hawaiian fishing villages, an extensive network of inland Hawaiian fish ponds, and several Hawaiian temples known as heiau.

The trust honors a Champion of the Land each year for its environmental stewardship. In 2017, it was United States Senator from Hawaii, Brian Schatz. In 2018, Dutch entrepreneur Henk Rogers’s charity supported clean energy. In 2019, it was Susan and Jac Kean, founding members of HILT.
